Why MADREMONTE Matters

​

Madre Monte is a living symbol.
In Latin American cosmology, she is the spirit of the wild Earth - the guardian of rivers, forests, and balance.

Caring about Madre Monte means caring about the living systems that sustain all of us and honoring the cultures that still remember how to live in right relationship with them.

Today, Madre Monte is also a real-world initiative:

a coalition of Indigenous and local communities protecting sacred lands in Costa Rica and Latin America, places that still hold pristine water sources, medicinal plants, and cultural wisdom passed down for generations.

By supporting Madre Monte, we:

• Protect biodiversity — preserving old-growth forests and the species within them.

• Empower Indigenous leadership — resourcing the original stewards of these lands.

• Revitalize culture and ceremony — honoring ways of life rooted in harmony, not extraction.

About the Festival Madremonte

​

"The Festival Madremonte was born in a town called Longo Mai, a multicultural and multiethnic town in Costa Rica. It was initiated to become a space and platform to give voice to the arts for the celebration and care of our Mother Earth, the Pachamama, bringing together the conscience of the collective with the land.

​

This festival has always been organized by members of the community, and has now reached the point of having a really important place in the southern region of Costa Rica. It weaves song, dance, storytelling, flavors and colors that remind us that identity is cultivated in community, and that art is an endeavour of love, resilience and resistance. Here the arts transform into words, words into action, and action into trust."

This coming year, the festival will moving from its home of Longo Mai, and taking root in the indigenous territory of Terraba. The Terraba, or Teribe, are an indigenous group with a rich cultural heritage that have lived off of the land in southern Costa Rica for more than 500 years. This is an incredible opportunity for iC to unite with these powerful movements and support in the raising of indigenous voices through the arts. ​
